WATERLOO REGION — The Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo chapters of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron, a volunteer boating organization, have decided to join forces.

The new group is called Grand River Power and Sail Squadron.

This move comes just in time for boating weather but also national boating safety awareness week. The national volunteer organization teaches and promotes safe boating practices.

"We've suffered like many volunteer organizations and seemed to have the same group of dedicated people with us for many, many years," said Bill Taylor, a squadron member.

The local boating enthusiasts hope to attract more members under their new banner. Both local squadrons have been around for more than 50 years.

On Saturday, the squadron will raise a flag at Cambridge City Hall at 8 a.m. to mark national boating awareness week, which is recognized annually from May 20 to 26.
